Update!

Hello! I am Nikki and if you are new to my blog welcome!! If you have been here before welcome back!!!!!

I started this blog through school as part of a work study program and it was a lot of fun! I did not really get freedom to talk about topics that I wanted because we had a theme each week but now that I am graduated maybe I can post here once and a while.

I know that I have been getting messages from people who have seen my posts and want to know specific things about the application process, visa related questions, or even questions about Korea. Which is awesome! I would love to tell you guys any information that would be beneficial to your processes! Unfortunately I was not able to see these messages until recently so if you have questions that you want me to answer in posts please leave it in the comments or feel free to contact me again! I would love to make a consolidated post for all of your inquiries 🙂

And if you guys want to know what I’m up to after graduating from Ewha then please follow my wordpress <Nikki at Ewha>!

I hope you all stay safe and see you in the next post!! ^^

Food and Restaurants on and off the Ewha Campus

Hi! I am here with my last post on food and restaurants on and off the Ewha campus.

As mentioned in my facility post, there are several restaurants on campus in the ECC building. There is also a Starbucks and a Bakery. There is a restaurant cafe called Dr. Robin which has pasta, pizza, and risotto as well as coffee and gelato. The Food court in ECC also has many options from Korean food to Chinese food and offers a student discount. There is also a Chinese restaurant called Cathy Ho in ECC that offers Chinese Cuisine at an affordable price.

Off campus, the options are truly endless for food. Ranging from affordable to gourmet, you can find that there are so many options to choose from and these options are always changing when something new comes around. Around campus you can find chains like KFC and Popeyes but there are also nicer restaurants that you can enjoy of different varieties. There are also a lot of options in terms of the types of food that you can choose from like Japanese, Korean, Korean fast food, Chinese, and much more.

There are so many options to pick and choose from around Ewha but many students, like myself, often try to go to more affordable places to eat. Some popular places for my friends and I are Mother-in-Law Bagel, Alchon, and Korean fast food like noodle Kimbab.

Hope this post was helpful! It is important to explore for yourself all of the options and pick and choose what is convenient and good for you.

Things to do near Ewha Womans University

Hi! I am back with an interesting topic: things to do for fun near campus. Ewha is a women’s university, and thanks to this, there are so many clothing stores near campus where you can find cheap clothes at a decent quality. There are also shoe stores and accessory stores that have very affordable products. Around Ewha there are also a lot of ‘road shops’ which are the popular chained cosmetic stores in Korea. There are famous stores like Cloe, Etude, Espoir, The Face Shop, Innisfree, Olive Young, Missha and many more! It is really convenient to compare prices with the stores because they are all brought together in one spot. The shopping around Ewha is definitely one of its biggest pros.

These are some of the affordable shoe and bag stores in front of the Ewha Campus! Bags are all ten dollars!!

There are a bunch of alley ways that are full of affordable clothes in front of campus

There are also a lot of different salons around campus, some that may offer a small discount for Ewha students. There are both hair salons and nail salons around campus so it is convenient when you want to pamper yourself. Another important thing around campus is the photo studios! You can take profile pictures and professional photos for visas or passports but you can also take photos with your friends to record your memories in an album.

Unfortunately, there are not a lot of bars or pubs around the Ewha campus. So everyone goes to Sinchon! This is the mecca of university students when they want to have a good time! So I suggest if you want to have a drink you can just walk five minutes to Sinchon and see that there are endless pubs, bars, and izakaya restaurants.

Hope this post was helpful letting you know some of the fun things there are to do around Ewha!

Ewha Campus Map

Hi! An important piece of information to know when attending any university is the Campus Map! Ewha’s Campus map can be easily found on the university’s website. You can even access it in English and get a clear depiction of each building on campus. When you first get to Ewha there is a campus tour in the orientation because the campus is large and it can be difficult for a new student to know where everything is on their first day. The school provides a printed pamphlet of the campus map but you can also find the campus map online here: https://www.ewha.ac.kr/mbs/ewhakr/jsp/campusmap_eng.jsp

This is the campus map that can be downloaded as a pdf file from the link above

The building that my major office is located in is number 30 on the map, the International Education building. This building is behind the school’s centennial museum and in front of the university church. Other buildings that I take my major classes in are ECC (Ewha Campus Complex) and Hakgwan. I have taken classes in the science building and the Posco building as well for elective courses.

I hope this post was helpful in introducing you to the Ewha campus!

Helpful Phone Apps as an Ewha Student

Hi! This week I will talk about something that is really convenient and helpful in order to have a comfortable student life at Ewha. Phone Applications! There are several phone apps that make your life so much easier.

I will start with an app that is useful for any student in Korea, not just Ewha students. That is Everytime. This is a schedule app that you can input your class schedule and refer to it at anytime of the day while also setting alarms for when you have class or even for miscellaneous memos. There is also a board section of the app that everyone from your school can post on various boards and you can also find various information through the boards. You have to verify your school then you can communicate with other students from your school and inquire on anything you are curious about and other students will respond. You can even post anonymously which helps when you are shy about asking certain questions.

This is what the home screen of Everytime looks like. It shows your classes for the day and the room they are in.
You can set up a widget of your schedule if you use an android phone so you can refer to it right away!
This is where to find Everytime on google play store. Make sure you use a Korean Gmail account in order to gain access.

There are also other helpful apps that are specific to Ewha. There are three in total and they all have different qualities. The first one is Ewha Mobile ID. This is an app that you can use instead of pulling out your student ID card. It is really helpful whenever you forget your ID card or just prefer to use your phone instead of your wallet. You can scan your mobile ID in various places on campus to gain access to facilities as well as get discounts on food. A place I often use my mobile student ID is to get quick access into the library without fumbling with my wallet looking for my student ID card.

this is what it looks like in the Google play store
This is what the mobile student ID card looks like. All you have to do is scan the QR code in the reader wherever you need access or verification.

Other helpful apps are Ewha cyber campus and Ewha mobile seating. With the cyber campus app, you can get easy access to your class information and also view online class videos anywhere you go. With Ewha mobile seating you can reserve a seat in a facility on campus like the reading rooms or places in computer rooms and the library. These are really helpful and necessary for students at Ewha.

This is the app that allows you to reserve seats in facilities
This is what the app looks like. You can choose where you want to sit as well as see how many seats are available in each facility.
This is the cyber campus app. It is extremely necessary in order to see your assignments as well as communicate with your professors.

The last app I would like to introduce you to is Ewha home. This is an app that combines all of the information on the Ewha website and puts it in an app so that you can view it comfortably all in one place. The app shows various things like the academic calendar, the shuttle schedule, the menus for all of the student cafeterias on campus, e-drive, Ewha important announcements, as well as connects you to the seating app and cyber campus apps. You can also access the Eureka portal system as well as the portfolio system where you can manage all of your student information along with your resumes.

This is Ewha home as shown in the Google play store
This is the home page for Ewha home showing some of the things that you can access.

I hope this was a helpful post in showing you some of the important apps that you should use not only as a student at Ewha but also as a student studying in a Korean university. See you in my next post!

Ewha Student Counseling Center

Hi! I am back with another post on student life at Ewha. I want to introduce you to an important facility on campus, the Student Counseling Center.

First, here is the link to the site so that you can check it out and see some of what it has to offer: http://cms.ewha.ac.kr/user/efcc/

Click the site and then press English for the English home page.

The Student Counseling Center provides counseling in groups as well as individual counseling in Korean, English, and Chinese. The center also offers psychological assessment of students as well as counseling that is specific to students on academic probation. The site also provides a list of different kinds of tips that help for students both in academics as well as their personal life.

You can apply for counseling through the Eureka portal system which is an online service for Ewha students. The center is located in the Student Union building on the third floor.

If you are a student at Ewha or are looking to go to Ewha, the Student Counseling Center is a useful tool to help you get through your life abroad as well as at Ewha.

Hope this was helpful and I will see you in the next post!

Part-time Work for a Foreign Student

Hi! I am back with another post on student life in Korea. You are able to work with a D-2 visa there are just some preliminary measures that you must take in order to work without breaking the laws that your visa entails.

As a D-2 student, you can actually work in any kind of job that Korean students work in. You can find jobs on various websites and apply for them. I personally have found part time jobs on Albamon and have worked in restaurants around the school or in Hongdae. Once you find the job you want, you are required to report it to the Office of International Affairs at Ewha and get the university stamp of approval. After this, you have to go to the immigration office by making a reservation on hikorea.go.kr. As an undergraduate student, you are only able to work 25 hours per week and as a masters you are allowed 30 hours per week. However, during the vacation, there is no limit to how much you can work.

You can find the form that you need to fill out on the Ewha International Affairs website. I posted about the website’s recent renewal a few weeks ago.

This is the link for the site:  isa.ewha.ac.kr

Hope this was a helpful post! See you in the next one.

Applying For Leave of Absence and a Return from Leave

Hi! This week I have come back with another important topic for international students at Ewha. I will explain a bit about how to apply for a leave of absence as well as a return from leave as an Ewha student. For any other information please make sure to refer to the official website and the page devoted to this subject:
https://www.ewha.ac.kr/mbs/ewhaen/subview.jsp?id=ewhaen_031002010000

So, you need to take a break from school? Don’t worry, you can! There are a lot of different reasons people take a break from school whether it be because of sickness or any other personal reason. You can request a leave of absence up to 90 days from the first day of classes of the semester. You can take up to one year off of school, which equals two semesters.

Tuition is also reimbursed based on the amount you attended of the semester. This information is can be found on the link above.

How to apply: – Request leave of absence (internet) → Print out leave of absence form → Approval by guardian (other) → Submit leave of absence form (Students Service Center)

You must visit the office to complete your request. Upon your request completion, you must leave Korea within 14 days as the school will notify immigration about your visa no longer being valid.

To return from your leave, you need to apply for your return. This process is similar to applying for the leave. The only difference is that you must apply in the proper dates in order to be able to register for classes. For the first semester, the application time is from early to late February and for the second semester, the time is early to late August.

The steps to application are as follows:
Ewha Portal Information System → Intranet → Request/Cancel Return from Leave of Absence or Request/Cancel Early Return from Leave of Absence

I really hope this week’s post was helpful and I will see you in next week’s post!

TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean)

Hi! This week I have a really important topic (or TOPIK lol) to talk about. That is the TOPIK exam. This is the test of proficiency in the Korean language. This test is included in one of the ways to fulfill your language requirement when applying to Ewha. The language proficiency requirements for applying to Ewha are as follows:

taken from the 2019 Fall Admissions Handbook

Although if you are from a Korean or English speaking institution, like I was, you do not have to take the TOPIK to apply to Ewha. I took it because I was originally going to go into the Korean Literature and Language major, but ended up going into a DIS major (Global Korean Studies). As mentioned above, you also have to reach level 4 of the TOPIK in order to reach the graduation requirement.

So, how can you apply for the TOPIK is the real question right? Well all you have to do is go to topik.go.kr and create an account. You can check the dates that you can take the test and check the registration times accordingly. Another helpful site that has a lot of information about the TOPIK dates, locations, as well as test information and study guides is https://www.topikguide.com/.

Another really important thing to know about the TOPIK and Ewha is that if you get a score above a level 4, Ewha will REIMBURSE YOUR TEST FEE! After getting accepted into Ewha, and you continue to work on raising your test level, the school will reimburse you the 30,000 won that it costs to take the test in Korea. Even if your major does not require you to have a level 4 to graduate, the TOPIK is still a very helpful test when working in Korea or staying in Korea after graduation. Therefore while at Ewha you should definitely take advantage of this perk and work on building up the highest TOPIK score you possibly can! Ewha also offers TOPIK support during the summer and winter semesters for a fee. This is for those students who want to work on getting their scores up as high as possible before graduating.

Well, that’s all for this weeks post! Hope it was helpful and I will see you in next week’s post!
